So, I accidentally skipped over this one when I was reading through the Demonica Underworld series. Suzanne makes so many appearances in the other books that it wasn’t until I was halfway through the first chapter of Cipher that I realized I had completely skipped Her Guardian Angel. Well, the ADHD says it’s illegal to stop a book halfway through to start another one, so I powered through Cipher, and, just for good measure, finished the rest of the Underworld books I was reading before coming back around.
Oops.
Going into this book, I already knew what was going to happen, but I can’t just skip it. I need to experience the story completely. I started it at my desk at work, and finished it a few hours later. It’s another short read, but not disappointing. I love Suzanne’s character as Azagoth’s baby girl, and her own desires to follow her passion for cooking, and for Declan. She’s fun and flirty, definitely flighty, and it’s a treat to see her annoy Hawkyn in a typical little sister sort of way.
I liked Declan’s story and his history. I liked that he was a closeted nerd with an obsession for comic books while also being a militant badass. That was pretty cool. I also enjoyed the nod to Supernatural in the way there were Underworld comics that told the story of what was happening in the series. Very cool.
As for Declan and Suzanne’s relationship, I found it to be very cute, and actually pretty spicy. The scene in the hidden dungeon room? 10/10. I was very entertained through the book and it was nice to actually read the story I had missed out on and had used context clues when I read later books.
9/10 recommend, very good.
