This book is the epitome of short and sweet. Or maybe short and spicy is more apt. Anyway, it was a great story and one I really enjoyed. I was excited to get to experience Zhubaal a little more and, man, he did not disappoint. In Azagoth and Hades, he was sort of a dick, but he’s really just an awkward guy with a sweet spot for his lost love.
Zhubaal has been waiting for over a century for the love of his life, Laura, to be reincarnated again. They had grown up together as Ipsylum, powerful warrior angels, and had fallen in love. Unfortunately, Laura fell from grace and Zhubaal followed her. They made an oath to be together and, even though Laura died, Z kept his oath.
Vex is a flighty, sexy daemani, a being that can absorb the souls of demons and humans. After accidentally absorbing the soul of something truly evil, she seeks out a necromancer, who tells her daemani are being killed and she needs to see Azagoth. She makes her way to the Grim Reaper to get the souls she’s accumulated exorcised while also hoping for employment, but the most evil soul she’s absorbed makes things a little more difficult than anticipated.
Z and Vex find themselves with an undeniable attraction between the two of them but Z, still holding fiercely to his oath to Laura, does his best to resist Vex while also trying to help her get the evil spirit exorcised.
This book was a fun little adventure, and I really liked Vex. She’s fun, snarky, sexy, and a badass. She sticks up for herself and doesn’t let Z run her over with his ideologies, while still caring for him. Z was the most frustratingly cute weirdo in the best way, and you really gotta admire the way he stuck to his guns about his oath with Laura. Sure, he was pigheaded about a lot of things, and it was totally unfair of him to expect Vex to not be herself, but the two meshed so well.
It was also so fun to get a return of Revenant and get to explore him just a teensy bit as the King of Hell. I love Azagoth however I can get him, and him and Lilliana are still goals.
Very fun, quick read. 10/10 recommend.
